Application Identifiers (AI) – GS1 128
Con il sistema di formattazione GS1-128 viene inserito l’AI (Application Identifier). E’ un numero posto all’inizio di una stringa di dati per indicare all’applicazione che tipo di dato si sta leggendo.
Per esempio è possibile codificare il peso di 35,97 kg con codice a barre standard codificando semplicemente il numero 3597, ma durante la lettura l’applicazione non è in grado di sapere se il valore che si sta leggendo sia un peso, un tempo, un prezzo o altro. L’Application Identifiers risolve questo problema.
Le specifiche GS1 definiscono molti AI, tra i quali i numeri di serie o le date di scadenza.

La seguente tabella contiene una lista degli AI validi. Alcuni AI sono seguiti da una “n” o una “y”: questo significa che all’AI può essere aggiunta una sola cifra con i seguenti significati:
- n: indica la lunghezza del campo dati.
- y: indica il numero di cifre decimali.
